private messages problem- stuck in outbox

I have been trying to send some private messages; however they get stuck in the outbox. PLease advise,

The messages work differently to emails, in that they stay in your outbox until read by the person whom you sent it to, then it shows as ‘sent’.

Might be worth clearing old messages from both know and sent boxes, they appear to have small capacity, when full can stop you sending .
