Clayton - welcome to the forum.

I'm not familiar with the 1930s/early '40s bikes but I've not seen engine numbers without letter prefixes or just 'X' as a prefix for a rigid single frame number.
Are you able to have a good look at the drive-side crankcase between the front engine plates to see what letters/numbers (if any) are stamped there? (Usually between the lugs and going 'round' the case, not across it.)
Also some pics of the whole bike (each side) and the numbers on the gearbox would be useful to the folks here who are more knowledgeable!

The frame is a restamp, the old number is part ground XG....
The engine has the same number shape so could be originaly a crankcase without a number.

Would it be hard to get a v5 for the bike if they had been tampered with as I don't want to purchase it then find out it's only good for parts as this would be a shame as it's a nice looking bike. Will have to go and look at it again and see if I can find any numbers and take more pictures thanks for your reply and will try to update in the come days

I don't know about England but you wouldend get papers in The Netherlands and the numbers would be blacklisted.

My advice; buy a basketcase Ariel with papers of the same model and use this one for parts.

Let's have a few more pictures - LH around the seat lugs, RH end of gearbox, front brake plate - at first glance it looks like a civilianised W/NG. There's a field stand spring bracket and no speedo drive in the gearbox...
cheers
