Magnetos are designed to work at around 12000v, supressed components raise this to around 25000v,causing insulation breakdown in the secondary winding.People will tell you that this higher voltage improves the spark, which it does, but it greatly increases the failure rate of the insulation. The secondary winding in a Lucas rotating coil mag contains about 1000 meters of copper wire of .004 dia with varnish insulation of about the same thickness applied. You can rewind your own,and many old books gave instructions for doing this. I allways thought that ignition supression laws came in in the seventies, but have been told that in Britain, the law was effective from July 1953.Bike manufacturers must have simply ignored it.Regards John.
