Hello Andy, It does look like a Ariel hub, spokes look pretty new to me so it could have been relaced on a later rim.
Or maybe OH/OG models had 21"frontwheel ?
Ah, I just thought about that, look in the Knowledgebase for the '39 catalog, there you should be able to see a OH/OG
I know of a man in New Zealand owning a OH/OG model , Nigel Ingliss, is he on this forum?
The RH500 cover is o.k. That's what you want to have on a Red Hunter !
I think prewar it had RH500 on it and postwar only VH .
but I could be wrong. regards, Vincent

me again, again! can you post a pic of the rear frame / rearspindle?
The 250 frames where rather special, 'short' wheel base ones.
The 'shortness' being in the rear wheel framelug, this was different as the two frametubes that meet there where shorter and so ending slightly further apart hence a different framelug was needed.
Postwar this frame lug (or maybe the whole frame?) was used on the rigid framed VCH competition models.

I think its a 'normal' rigid frame, but the rear stand points are cut off (large extra hole on left side is for sidecar)
It's a RED hunter so the clutch basket should be red (the former owners thoughts....) and it has some extra holes in it !
chainguard could have started as a AJS/Matchless item, but now shorter.
