350 bigend torque figure ?

Post by Vincent.vanGinneke »

What is the torque setting for a 350 single bigend nut? - or for a VB -
No mention in Waller or Pitman's

I have read the Brummie Guide to Torqueing by Wali but I would like to know a slightly more scientific approach..... :D

Thanks.

That might be a bit much, the official figure is FT, 60-80 ft lb is sufficient, as long as the taper is good, too tight and you may shatter the wheel

To be honest I don't use a set torque just basically as tight as I can. The limit is reached when the crank flies out of the vice that is holding the crank while you lean on a 2 metre scaffold pole.

Do the DRIVE side first. You can hold that wheel in a Vice and it's doing the most work I don't use Torque figures. You go by feel and the words "Pretty tight". JAPs have shallow tapers angles and 26 tpi threads and are easy(ER) to crack the wheels. Corser threads need more torque. Hard to use a conventional Tension wrench and a "G" cramp holds a long ring spanner on the NUT fine. Have it a good fit and make the end that's facing the flywheel dead flat so it doesn't tend to slip on the nut. IF the thread is not true to the centre Line of the Pin, it will tend to throw everything out of true. Nev
