Steel cased late WNG CP gearbox

Post by Vincent.vanGinneke »

Seen at the annual Dutch Ariel Club meeting last weekend.
someone brought a late WNG steel cased CP gearbox.
I thought those were made from cast iron but this one is made up from welded steel sheet .
I had never seen one before, only read about it. a curiosity and perhaps of interest to others here :D

Hell of a job to make that, which I think has been done at home in a good workshop or at least a skilled person. I know about the cast iron shells but can see no advantage of fabricating from steel as casting patterns were available. There also appears to be a home made k/start and gear lever. Why is the k/start case still in ally? Somebody must have been desperate.

These parts came from a bike brought to Germany from East Europe only in the last few years, I bought them as curios.
