The 1957 models NH VH VB KH FH all had as standard the fully enclosed rear chaincase or FERC as it has become known. So what you seem to be looking for is a pretty rare item. I am not aware of ever having even seen one in upwards of 50 years of Ariel ownership. Perhaps someone will be kind enough to post a photo of one.

Hi

I needed a chainguard for my 58 FH restoration, bought a repro one from Draganfly. Not cheap and did require a bit of 'fettling' but pleased with the outcome. If you decide to go this way, I strongly suggest trial fitting before painting ;)

I saw one for sale on eBay a few years ago. Clearly people knew what it was because the final price was gigantic, I think between £2-300.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Draganfly sell a pattern one.

In the 1957 sales literature the 'all enclosed rear chaincase as illustrated available at extra charge'. In the 1958 sales literature it states 'all enclosed rear chaincase available for Swinging Arm Frame Models at extra £2 15. 0. basic price, 13/8 Purchase Tax, Total £3 8s 8d. This means it was an optional extra. Merry Christmas !

Given the high cost of a a FERC, I am looking to use the 'hockey stick' type that only covers the top of the chain. Not as effective as the FERC but at least it provides some protection for the driver if the chain snaps.
There are a number of pattern ones from India on eBay at less than £80 and Drags sell one for about that price. Having not bought one yet I don't know how well they will fit.

I bought this vb600 with the intention of a full restoration ,it has spent the last 20 years in a shed but since i have got it home and given it a good clean its very original and only missing the chain guard so ideally a second hand one or i will have to suitably age the replacement .

Hi

Do you have the original forward part of the FERC? I did and assume it's because the gearbox sprocket has to be removed in order to remove it.
