Huntmaster Sump Strainer

Post by simon.holyfield »

Folks,

I wonder if anyone can help.

I have my oil pickup pipe refitted:

I have a new strainer from Draganfly, manufactured by SRM - not cheap. It doesn't fit.

Is the strainer wrong (maybe an A10 one?) or is the pickup pipe bent?

Any guidance gratefully received - along with the correct strainer, if anyone has one spare!
cheers

Hi Simon

Here's a couple of photos of mine, which is used in conjunction with an original strainer:

and a rather poor photo of another original strainer, (believed to be one removed from an A10).

Hope they are good enough for you to compare and identify differences.

That's excellent Mick thank you.

I think my pipe is slightly bent, don't you?

Hi Simon

Difficult to be sure:

I think I'd be tempted to adjust' the strainer with a grind stone in a Dremel rather than try to bend the tube, (and especially not in situ).

Absolutely. Someone suggested moving the gauze within it's 'carrier' - I might try that, or make a bespoke one. That tube is very stiff.

A10 strainers don't fit - the hole is in the wrong place, but unfortunately the difference isn't so much as to be easily noticeable.
When I last rebuilt my FH engine (3 or 4 years ago) I was incorrectly supplied with an A10 strainer by Drags and went through the same sort of puzzling that Simes is doing.
I'd suggest getting back to Drags, explain the problem and ask them to check that they do actually have the two different types - then buy (again) the proper Huntmaster strainer from them and send what you've got now back for a refund.
(I know, there are a couple of assumptions in there somewhere but that's the process I adopted, successfully!)

After a useful reply from our friends in Bungay, I learned that they modify the A10 strainers manufactured by SRM, moving the hole.

After equally useful replies from the forum and the FB pages, I realised my pickup pipe was indeed a bit bent.

Fits now.
