gearbox sprocket

Post by allenbrighton »

hi guys --getting confused ,, my 55 sq4-4 piper mk2 --was a chair bike so the output sprocket on the gearbox has been changed , [ the speedo gearing hasnt] so i want to put it back to standard --the service manual states 23 teeth , but there seems to be many conflicting sizes --cant find a definitave answer as 23 teeth seems to be too big any clues ?

regards

Gearbox is generally 19t, it sounds like you have 23 engine sprocket. These are available in various sizes.to change fearing only change engine sprocket.

I'd expect the gearbox sprocket to be 19t and the rear wheel sprocket to be 47t for both
solo and sidecar work. Changing the ratios was done on the crankshaft sprocket with 25t
for solo work.

If the speedo is badly adrift it could well be the wrong type. The Smiths book lists S/467/3/L
as the one for 1955. That said, even the correct speedo can be well out if it needs fettling.

If you are changing the gearing then note that the clutch chain wheel can be changed. They are 44T standard but also available in 40T.
Square 4 mk1, Square 4 mk2, BSA C12.
