NH primary chain case
The rebuild of my 1956 NH is makeing steady progress but can anyone till me what the small hole in the inner primary chain case is? Is it to do with automatic oiling and if so how?
I have attached a couple of pics. showing what I'm talking about.
Cheers Norm

Re: NH primary chain case
That's the primary chain oiler. There's a spout behind it (or should be) and then you have a screw with a needle point in the outer half of the case. There's a spring under the screw head to stop it shaking loose.
cheers

Re: NH primary chain case
I thought that by 1956 the FERC had been introduced and the inner chaincase
was altered, as was the chain oiler. For the FERC it comes from the oil tank and
not the primary chaincase.
Also, how come the clutch is still in place? Has the outer cover been modified
to allow this?

Re: NH primary chain case
The little trough to guide to oil out through the hole is still present on the 1956 case but there shouldn't be a hole or spout on the other side. The hole for the metering needle in the outer case is filled by a small round headed screw. Given the ragged nature of the hole and looking closely it appears that it has been made by the end of a screw that was too long being used to fill the hole in the outer.

Re: NH primary chain case
Thanks for info.
I should have mentioned that the bike is a bit of a "bitsa"! Acording to the engin no. the engin is 1954 VH.
Some more info .... Behind the inner chain case there is a stub of casting that looks to have been broken off. There is a threaded hole in the outer chain case. The oil tank has 2 outlets (feed and return) to engin 1 of which has a 3/16" dia tube Teed off for the rocker feed, it also has 1- 3/16" dia tube straight out of the bottom of the oil tank which I guess must be for the primary chain oiler.
Yes I shouldn't have fitted the clutch yet!
Is there some kind of rubber seal to stop oil splash on the inner and outer chain cases? And I presume the chain runs in an oil bath as there is an over flow screw in the outer chain case (max level). If this is right do I need a primary chain oiler?
Also what is the FERC please?
Any thoughts would be appreciated

Re: NH primary chain case
My apologies - FERC is 'Fully Enclosed Rear Chaincase'.
To fit the FERC 1956 and later bikes have gearboxes with mainshafts
and engines with longer drive side mainhsfts to move the primary
drive out to make room for the new rear chaincase.
The 'straight out' pipe from the oil tank is for the rear chain.

Ah, the penny has dropped !
I thought that somehow the primary chain must be oiled from the oil tank not realizing it was the drive chain that was sort of splash fed from the primary chain case. Thanks.
Any ideas on the seals?

Re: NH primary chain case
I've just found out on the draganfly site that there never was seals behind the clutch!
