Cam identification

Post by Steve.Smith »

Hi all. I have a 1938 VG engine in my bike that has been fitted with a single lobe cam. Is there any way to tell if it has been ground with the quieting ramp? Should I stick with the 0.002" clearance?

Steve,

You could do worse than look at the following thread:

viewtopic.php?t=13444

I'd stick with the 0.002" clearance with an unmarked cam but I'm not
sure what I ought to do with an 'A' cam.

If the pushrods are alloy, go to 6 and 8 thou. If they are steel, 2 thou will be ok provided that you set each tappet when the foot of the cam follower for that tappet is at 180 degrees to maximum lift of the cam.

Thanks for the replies. I know that the pushrods are steel so will stick with the 2 thou setting. I did try it with the 6 & 8 thou setting but it seemed very noisy. No doubt at the end of the year I will be looking for a bit more speed!
Many thanks, Steve
