Triple clamp for green lane red hunter.

Post by DavidWhite.side »

I'm building a trail bike around my 57 Red Hunter frame, engine and gear box. I want to use Ariel parts where ever possible. The bike has the cast (?) upper triple clamp with cut out for speedo ....
Is there an Ariel triple clamp I can replace the speedo type top clamp with that allows mounting for the handle bars as well ?

And a recommendation for modern / classic rear shocks, 1" -1.5 " longer than standard would be good ...

Any but the very first triple clamps should fit and all but the last - 1956 on - use 2 'U' bolts
to hold the 'bars on while the last use a special clamp.

Be careful extending the rear suspension units as the top run of the rear chain will happily
saw its way through the frame just above the swinging arm. Using a bigger back sprocket
helps but the speedo which is driven off the gearbox then reads wrongly. I use the standard
length rear shocks and standard 47t back sprocket with a 19t engine sprocket - standard
350 gearing. It's a big old lump for serious green laning.

My idea of green lane riding is forestry tracks and loops and drove ways .....
Ok, so taking your advice on board ... Hagon shocks ? what length ?
Thanks again

Rather annoyingly, I can't find my notes at the moment nor can I find the thread
on this forum. Memory suggests 11"1/2 between centres and Draganfly's
website suggests 12".

Just had a chat with Draganfly they have 2 triple clamps in the secondhand spares section .. pt.no.s H2-51U AND H2-56U. Would either be a direct replacement for the "speedo in triple clamp" type currently fitted to my 58 Red Hunter ? If not, does anyone have any ideas on what would fit by pt.no. ?

Why do you want to replace the one you have which I think is a H2-51?

H2-56 is the last type which needs the special clamp for the 'bars.

The 'U' in the Draganfly parts number quoted simply mens 'Used'.

For road use I want to use a small wireless trials speedo .... I'm concerned the speedo in clamp type is not the strongest from a stress point of view for off road use. It never seem to be apparent on any Ariel trail bikes.

Mmm. You can't have seen mine then - including a trials sidecar. The alloy yoke is perhaps
not as strong as the one used on the HS but I've never had any trouble with them cracking
or breaking.

I agree if you're not using a Smiths speedo or something that fits in the hole in the top yoke
it does look rather strange.

The early off road/competition bikes (VCH etc) seem to have used the 'standard' alloy top yoke, see Paul Jameson's ISDT KHA rebuild topic and also Brian Walker's VCH pic here:

I may be wrong but I think the HT trials bikes used the narrower BSA arrangement for the teles, so the Ariel alloy yoke wouldn't fit those anyway.

Mine has BSA yokes but these won't fit in place of Ariel yokes as the
BSA yoke is shorter - if I remember correctly - even though the steering
head bearings are frustratingly similar.
