Then it is fit the seal to the oil seal cup, screw it home and tighten using the special spanner you have just made for the purpose. Then you can take the upper one off again, because the lower shroud won't fit over the oil seal cup.

Having re-fitted the oil seal and cup, the unit can be slipped into the frame, but it takes a little trial and error to find out how. You then slide the upper shroud part way down into the frame and fit the special lower conical flat section spring inside it (again, a lot easier said than done) and slide the upper shroud down into place (without letting the conical spring jump out again.)

The main spring (another special, with thinner section wire due to the lack of clearance) will drop into place and all you need to do then is compress the main spring whilst screwing the special top cap on. That is relatively easy! Fit the locknut, then the oil filler cap (all made new from stainless) and your damped plunger mechanism is installed.

Having rebuilt this set, I can safely say that I know why Ariel never put the system onto production bikes. As far as I know, only about 10 sets were ever made.

The engine should be easy enough now............

Re: The KHA restoration ends (finally).

Post by paul.jameson »

Today I finally got the KHA started and then took her up the road for the first time. There will be plenty of shaking down to do but the first impressions are favourable. Here she is after the trip which was all of 4 miles long. Starting for the first time was not as quick as one might have hoped. Initially I had the plug leads the wrong way round but I hadn't checked them on the grounds that it is easier to swop them over than to check !! Then the left cylinder did not want to fire. Eventually I found the inlet tappet adjuster was catching on the strengthening rib on the underside of the valve cover. That sorted, it was deal with a minor leak on the reserve petrol tap (tighten the adjustable cork) and check that the dynamo was polarised correctly (which it was). Then up the road we went.

Very, very nice Paul!
(And looking forward to some comments on how that hydraulically-damped back end rides!)

Very nice Paul. I to would like to know how the hydraulic rear end works out.
In the various photos the bike appears to be different colours. Colour rendition clearly a problem of the digital era.
