The original material which is essentially Canvas and Bakelite is close to being as good as you'll get. It cops a hell of a hiding. Some other brands had steel gears but are more critical on lubrication and shock loading. Magnetos are chain or gear driven. Not much GIVE on a thumping single. Rotating Magnets magnetos are slightly better at taking shocks and a generator is better driven by a V belt. Nev

aha, so for instance the Alton generator with it's 10 small magnets on a magdyno would benefit from a V belt arrangement.
hmmm, food for thought.

I tried an Alton on my AJS 650 a couple of years ago. Being gear driven it sounded horrendous at tickover speeds as the 'notchiness' of the magnets played havoc with the backlash in the geartrain. Within the hour it was repacked and on its way back to the supplier. They agreed that at low engine speed they could be a tad noisy - I was more concerned about potential damage. A belt drive would certainly help mask the design trait.
I rebuilt the dynamo with 12v compnents (the bike has an electronic ignition system) and all has been sweetness and bright lights since

Done it, not sure how accurate I've been though but I've done my best,, I've gone for a tad over 1/2 BTDC. I used my timing gun on the screw that holds the magnet.

Finally got at fitting my new stainless siamese exhaust, the old one has rusted through in a few places.

New one fitted

That all went OK but whilst I was at things maybe a check of the drive chain and wheel nuts would be a good idea. Three were fine but ohh dear the forth,:oops:

One of the studs had snapped, lucky one of those easy outs came to my rescue and unscrewed easily
The other half with the wheel nut was stuck on the sprocket, hacksaw got that removed

I was after fitting it

I bought it from Armours, I only use the bits that go into the head, the rear part and silencer is from a VH which fits over the the front part
