Telescopic fork bolt hole

Post by dennis.t »

My '54 VH500 came without forks and now I have attached some I have a bolt hole in each side of the yoke that has no obvious use. Please see photo. I can't find reference to it in Drags drawings. I believe the front brake cable abutment is part of the mudguard centre stay so I do not think either bolt hole is concerned with the brake set up. I should be grateful for any advice.

Dennis - I think those holes are for some of the headlight cowl mounting screws (1956-on).

Simon,

Thank you that makes sense. I have no cowl but I have a self-contained headlight so I don't need to use those bolt holes.
Many thanks,

Hi Dennis,

For 1954 the yokes should be minus the steering lock boss, I may have a spare one if you want to but the correct yoke on at some point.

Rob,
Thank you and that is interesting. My original yokes had the steering lock sawn off for some reason and rather badly done. Not knowing any better I replaced the yoke with a steering lock minus the key barrel that I do not have.
The bike is a bitsa because the seller only had an engine and frame so originality is not so important to me. I get bits where I can. Having said that the restoration is coming along nicely with engine and gearbox in place in a newly painted frame and wheels on. It is now largely a matter of bolting bits on.

In the photo the frame is for a steering lock - maybe a late '54 (so a '55 model).
