Lucas E 3 dynamo

Post by Mick B »

Good Morning,
I am appealing for help in locating a Lucas E 3 dynamo that is suitable for an Ariel model B. This is a 1929 model currently under restoration in the Czech Republic. It is about 90% complete but the owner is missing the above mentioned dynamo. In the notes he sent me he states that, "He needs a Lucas dynamo E3 with cutout"

I have done a quick ebay search but my lack of knowledge on this subject does not allow me to identify if those that are for sale are correct for the year and model.

If anyone could assist or has one for sale either working or not then please get in touch. I have seen the quality of his work and it is excellent. Any sale of what is undoubtedly, I would assume, quite a rare item would be going to a good home.

I look forward to any replies

Mick

A correct one of that age is likely to be hard to find but any E3 dynamo will fit or can be made to fit quite easily. They are all 3" in diameter, the correct one will have different end castings to the later ones. All will have the third brush cut-out arrangement up to 1935, which is best removed and replaced by a discrete electronic regulator, unless he really likes a challenge. From 1936-48 the dynamo looks a little more modern and doesn't have the cut out in the dynamo, it having been moved to the regulator. Later dynamos are a little longer and are consequently suffixed with an L and produce 60 watts instead of 40W.
The Magdyno type are likely to be the best, avoid the ones for twins as they have a funny end plate.
The type you want looks like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185509635025 ... Sw~QRi2njI this is dated April 1932 See the 432 stamped on top.
The correct drive end plate looks like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224902651856 ... SwvRpiPFhj
Here is another but I cannot read the date https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/165332024103 ... SwBylh-TWe
This one is a bit rough and missing the comm end cover https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/402468514113 ... SwCU9fdahE
End cover here https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224464920294 ... SwNepgomAt

The parts are pictured in the 1930 parts book, where the dynamo is simply listed as E3, the later E3M is designed as part of the Magdyno.
