Engine/gearbox alignment FH
Re: Engine/gearbox alignment FH
Morning Mick
Many thanks for the pic - very helpful.
I note that in both your and other pics of that FERC/gearbox squeeze, your mounting nut has no washer under it. Mine has a whopper! About 2/2.5mm thick. I think I’ll have to remove it and put something smaller/nothing on instead to help open out a space.
I’ll keep you posted…

Hi Martin
As you will see from the 'FH' photo, I have no washer on the plate to frame stud on that side either, that's how it was when I disassembled it.
Regards Mick

You do not need any washer under that nut, because that side engine plate has the flat on the hole to stop the stud turning. So you put the stud through the hole and screw the nut on by hand such that the stud doesn't protrude. Then you tighten it up by putting a nut and washer on the other end of the stud.
When you adjust the primary chain you work from the other side of the bike so you don't need to touch the nut behind the primary chaincase - even if you could get at it easily, which you can't.

Re: Engine/gearbox alignment FH
I’ve removed the thick washers leaving a nicely comfortable 2-3mm gap between PCC/FERC and the gearbox amounts.
With PCC back on, it still requires tightening to ‘pull’ it all into line (ie it doesn’t all slickly align, but hey - what’s 0.5mm between friends?).
The clutch basket still hits the inside of the PCC outer. I’ve tried to attach a short vid (not sure if that’s allowed - I’ll find out!) showing quite a wobble on its bearing. It seems to be the reason why it catches, that play is enough to make a connection - at speed that might be disastrous? Is that a) normal (the clutch plates take up the slack etc) b) abnormal - get new needles into the brass cage quick).
Thoughts welcome
Thanks
Martin

Hi Martin
Getting there
Fit the clutch plates etc. and see what you've got.
Regards Mick

Re: Engine/gearbox alignment FH
As Mick says, try the clutch plates and see if that causes the basket to miss the chaincase. If it doesn't, get another of the 6 hole washer for the bolts which hold the clutch basket on and fit it between the clutch sprocket and the basket. That will move the basket out by the thickness of the washer. I have to have an extra one on my Healey to deal with the same problem.

Err! isn't that in the wrong direction, it's hitting the outer PCC.paul.jameson wrote: ↑Fri Jul 22, 2022 8:18 pm That will move the basket out by the thickness of the washer.
Maybe explore moving the PCCs out by shimming the attachment to the frame through stud?

Re: Engine/gearbox alignment FH
As the clutch basket is outside the outer primary chaincase, the extra washer moves it further out, so further away from touching the outer chaincase.

Thanks Mick, Paul
With clutch all fitted, there is less wobble, but still some there.
If I could be really cheeky and ask - would anyone with an FH (or I guess any GB gearbox/clutch combo) with the clutch dome currently off be able to give their clutch basket a good old wiggle and let me know if there is any movement (ie ‘they all do that, sir’) or, have I got wear in those pesky rollers allowing an unusual amount of loose movement. I get a perceptible 0.2- 0.5m movement as it ‘rocks’ on its bearing.
Thanks
