SQ4 Crankshaft Sprocket

Post by simon.holyfield »

I know the camshaft sprocket is LH thread - please relieve my paranoia and confirm the crank is as well!
cheers

Chaps, are we sure about the crankshaft pinion being an RH thread? The engine sprocket is RH, and I would have expected the nuts on the opposite side of the engine to be LH - the camshaft is!

IF you are talking about the timing side, the thread is normally opposite to the way the shaft runs. Nev

I am indeed talking about the timing side Nev.

I believe that the thread on the crankshaft pinion is LH - so the motion of the shaft tightens the thread, as it does on the camshaft pinion.

Am I right?

I cannot specifically say YES but the logic is there and I would try that way. Someone must have a crank sitting on a bench somewhere? Nev.

Reading Mr. Waller's book for the umpteenth time, I notice he draws attention to the fact that the camshaft nut is LH, but makes no mention of the direction of the thread of the crankshaft pinion nut, implying it is RH.

I'll get the impact driver out again.
cheers

Gents
drive and timing side of both cranks are right hand thread. The easiest way to undo the nuts is to use a rattle gun, but alternately insert a bar through the little end and support both ends of the bar on packers sitting on the crankcase. Turn the crank untill the bar prevents the crank from turning any more then use a long bar on a socket to undo the nut. Do not attempt to shock the nut undone as you may damage the conrod.
