Ade,

The bit that matters is the allen key for the centre bolt. If that's not a good fit things
can go horribly wrong if the bolt head gets damaged.

In the past I've managed with with the gudgeon pins wedged with blocks of wood
across the crankcase mouths.

The bolt should unscrew a turn or two and then butt up against a circlip in the
crankshaft. Another turn should then disengage the taper and the shafts can be
fiddled out.

It's well worth clocking up the crank ends before attempting to undo the bolt.
That way you have an idea of just how true they were so when It comes to
putting it all back together you know what to expect.

Thanks Will, I've heard and read all sorts of horror stories about not using the special tool and wanted to make sure I did it correctly as I've never had one of these engines apart before.

The part you have to be vary careful of is drawing the crankcase end covers off.
This really does need an extractor. I have a beam extractor I use for pretty much
everything which did the job with a pair of 1/4" UNC bolts - do check this thread
size though.

Re the locating plate for locking the crank on the Arrow.

Apart from the original ones, Drags have made some over the last 4 or 5 years but looking at my records and I have made and sold around 90 of these plates of varying types-- some the basic plate, others a casting a bit like the original but stronger and a few a hybrid type. Wonder where they have gone too-- I have only seen one for sale on e-bay ? Brian H. p the cast one is number 7

Thanks for recent transaction of other tools B.H. Hopefully someone will sell me one of these elusive locking plates!
I don't really want to strip my engine without using the proper kit.

Hi Adrian,

Over the last few years I've only seen two original locating plate tools. One was broken and the other repaired but did not look too good, so you may have to wait a long time to find one
Since Drags have a long waiting list, I've reorganised my work list so should have a plate available in about a week or so. See attached picture-- the jig with hardened bushes enables me to keep the holes accurate but do the drilling quickly.

Regards Brian H.
