'E10' fuel
'E10' fuel
Did anyone see this?

Was your Ariel built to be E10 compliant?

Re: 'E10' fuel
If you've had 5% going to 10% will just require the slightest amount of enrichening. Australia never had E5 but have had E10on 91 for ages. We even have an E 85 for high performance stuff. Engines run much cooler but need a fair amount of richening of the fuel ratio. You will probably find practically no change is needed as carbs wear to rich a bit anyhow..Nev

Re: 'E10' fuel
Petrol has had more or less alcohol added ever since Karl Benz went for a drive, and there was never the uproar before .....I used to use "Phillips 66",which had a lot of alcohol added.....in the 70s.

Re: 'E10' fuel
hi there is a lot of old engines will not run right ,with E10 and it eats through rubber patrol pipes and makes petrol taps leak and eats brass carb floats and metal fuel tanks
that is why car petrol tanks are now made of plastic and carb floats
i have had to change lots of rubber petrol pipes that has started to leak with E5 i have change it for pipe that is ok with up to E20 and change my carb floats and petrol taps and coated the inside my metal fuel tanks
and i use a additive in my petrol and in my diesel for the rapeseed oil they put in it to stop it going OFF and getting water in it

Re: 'E10' fuel
Ethanol does turn the wall of older rubber tubing into something of the consistency of silicon rubber freshly squeezed from a tube, so any tubing in contact with E10 has to be changed to tubing that meets specs of SAE 30R9.JohnnyBeckett wrote:ith E10 and it eats through rubber patrol pipes and makes petrol taps leak and eats brass carb floats
However, I've been running a truly long-term experiment with E10 for well over ten years, with brass Amal jets and pieces from an Amal Monobloc in sealed jars of straight E10 gasoline, E10 with a well-known fuel "stabilizer," and pure ethanol (i.e. E100). Using a sensitive scale, to date there has been no measurable loss in weight of any of those metal pieces in those three solutions. Specifically, if there has been any loss in metal in over ten years it is less than my detectable limit of 0.02%.

Re: 'E10' fuel
hi i have found that no lead and E10 in petrol eats the brass float and makes it leak and it wears the brass needle jet and it runs rough and ritch a good few years ago we worked on a new needle jet to stop this happening on the SU carbs so they would pass the emissions and run right and, one of my friends and pit crew, father in law worked at SU and was the designer and tuner for new SU carburetors for new engines being developed

Re: 'E10' fuel
. Any methanol or ethanol will absorb water as does many brake fluids. If I ride in rain I take the bowl off and flush it to clear ALL water. Some fuels will go "off" if left for long periods.(months) . Some later aromatic blends don't vaporise as well as older fuels so you have to tickle the carb a bit more for starting. Mineral oils do harm to pure rubber. get some on a tube, tire or radiator hose and find out. I know of no likely reaction of pure ethanol with any common metal. Metho and castor oil was an emergency fluid for drum brake systems . Nev

Just found this,
http://www.bmf.co.uk/news/show/will-eth ... motorcycle
Also just had an anti det run of my Douglas twin and found there is a large amount of rust swilling about in the tank! It started and ran well enough, but one cylinder was considerably warmer than the other (no online filter) I'll have to take it off and get a better look.
I wonder if any of you could recommend a company that will de rust and seal the tank, possibly in North Yorkshire.I
Best regards,
BW

Re: 'E10' fuel
specialistdents.co.uk based in Middleton near Pickering is well worth contacting. They removed some dents and chemically cleaned the inside of an Ariel tank for me. It was okay with a pressure test so I didn't opt to have sealer applied.
I was impressed by the service provided including the turn around time.
