Good Morning.
Before taking the plunge, could I please ask the knowledgeable folk on here for their opinions and thoughts of the 1939 Red Hunter thats currently for sale on carandclassic (ref c1321424) and ebay
Are there any concerns apart from the eyewatering price?
Thanks in anticipation.
Pete

Well, its a thumbs up for me on the machine, but its a thumbs down on the price
(Dealer with a lot of stock, mixed bag of makes, but a lot of trials bikes and new ebikes).

It's very shiny and will be a complete so-and-so to clean after a run.
There are a number of details which would concern me - like the
dangling throttle cable and the position of the controls on the 'bars.
The instruments in the tank panel may well be original but they
still look wrong somehow.
There are experts who know these things better than me but is it a
later carb and are the rear mudguard stays correctly assembled?
For that money I would want to see everything working and working
properly and know that all the parts are 'proper'.

Late 1930s 500s come up for sale from time to time, few are perfect but I've never seen one close to this price before. I doubt he'll sell it at this price so if you like it you could let him stew for a few weeks and then make a sensible offer. In the meantime a better priced machine may well surface.

Re: 1939 Red Hunter for sale on carandclassic
Centre bracket for front mudguard is too short so the mudguard sits too high.
Front number plate is an incorrect shape.
Front brake rod should be black, not chrome.
Wrong horn, incorrectly mounted.
Top fork links fitted incorrectly - the chamfers should be bottom inner, not top inner.
Handlebars are 1" parallel - I would have expected 1" to 7/8" taper bars
Clock is a replica.
No patent number disc on tank panel screw.
Modern petrol tap.
Goodness knows where the legshields came from but it wasn't Selly Oak!
Replica saddle with barrel shaped springs which should be parallel.
Valanced rear mudguard is a mystery as these were normally not fitted to Red Hunters and normally fitted with a valanced front as well when fitted.
Wrong rear number plate and lamp for 1939.
Toolbox is postwar.
Light switch is ex-WD, not civilian.
These minor niggles aside, this is one very nice motorcycle indeed which will be a delight to ride. Pity about the price.

Re: 1939 Red Hunter for sale on carandclassic
Hi All. Many Thanks for your replies and comments. Its confirmed my thoughts that its rather heavy on the price. I'll think I wait for a bit and see what happens although the vender assures me that there has been a lot of interest from overseas which seems slightly unexpected what with the import fees and taxes to be added on top of the purchase price. Regards, Pete

Re: 1939 Red Hunter for sale on carandclassic
Some price...
May I add my moaning penny to it...
That (repro) clock took some beating from the handlebar, so something is not seating properly there.
Exhaust cooling rings are Triumph.
As stated the toolbox is the wrong type, it should have a loose lid with central -large- knob, those centre knob toolboxes are pretty hard to find.
I think -not sure- that the kickstarter should have a straight shank. not one with a bend in it.
The gearlever looks as being made (shortened) from a WNG CP gearlever .
I think the front brake rod should run inside the front mudguard stay, the lever sits reversed.
The central spring in the girder fork looks odd, is that correct? I thought it should have more of a pineapple shape.
Apart from that , the front forks look rather 'sagged' .
Handlebar clutch and brake levers should be solid not the folded sheet metal type.
Valve lifter lever is separate, but it should have a twin manette MAG/EXH on top.
Yes, those leg shields are horrendous.
So, there you have it, as always: If you drive by at speed no-one wil notice all those tiny details.
But you will have that nagging thing on your mind that you have been cheated for a pretty large som...
