Last spring the owner of one of the rare bikes we wanted for the exhibition in Brisbane was worried shipping it there was too risky because of the uncertainties of covid at that time. He subsequently loaned it to the Top Mountain museum. Risk evaluation is not an exact science.

Funny none of the bike museums have heard of fire sprinklers .....And should I put anything of value in a building with wood floors?

The fire at the National Motorcycle Museum in ‘03 was a bit of a comedy of errors. There weren’t any sprinklers and apparently this was because when it was designed and built in the late 70s, sprinklers were considered unreliable and Roy Richards was concerned about water ruining the banqueting rooms and storage areas underneath the museum, should the sprinklers go off unnecessarily.
There was/is a fire station 1/2 a mile away at the National Exhibition Centre, and once a month the fire brigade would come and check the hydrant.
When the fire happened, they came and attached the hoses and opened up. Unfortunately the resultant pressure drop in the water main triggered a low pressure alarm at the local pump house, and the controls shut the water off automatically, I suppose assuming it was a large leak ? The fire brigade couldn’t get anyone to reset whatever had shut down, and had to shut the 4 lane A45 and run some hoses 500 yds to the lake at the NEC, and pump the water from there, until the mains came back on. Obviously this wasn’t a 5 minute affair.
Hindsight is obviously 20:20 but I hope there’s a good excuse for the Austrian catastrophe

The stagnant water in fire sprinkler systems spew a rusty, oily, mucky scum that causes a mess that's difficult and expensive to clean up, and often destroys what they were intended to protect. Basically, fire sprinklers save buildings at the expense of damage or destruction to their contents.

A lot easier to clean off motorcycles though, and considering the option of no sprinklers is a ‘no-brainer’.
If the museum owners were clever ( and rich ) enough to build at such a remote location, a high tech fire suppression system should have been mandatory. A vanity project that went badly wrong
