What voltage are you using?

If you're using 6 volts have you tried the dynamo with a mechanical regulator (MCR 2)?

Have you measured the field coil resistance?

I have a similar issue on my VH (DVR2) and WNG (mechanical regulator) if they are not run on a regular basis i.e. on startup no charge showing on the ammeter. A quick clean of the commuter with a rag and meths ( to clean away a slight film of carbon from the brushes) and both immediately show a charge and continue to do so on subsequent start ups. I do not believe it is the regulator/s at fault. My thoughts are either soft brushes leaving a film of carbon or weak field coils.

The residual magnetism can weaken when it site for a while. IF you "flash" it it will probably work fine. The air gap in the regulator may also be a bit wide, making the initial pull in more difficult..Nev
