Have been working on the carb, was likely spilling more than it burnt,
now running better on a type 6 last mpg was near 100.
It got down to 40 at one point.

Re: The Beast lives
Hi Ralph, thanks for the reply, all clear now !
Re: The Beast lives
With the second lock down I decided to have a look at a spare mag for the NG thats been sitting
about for a long time, a quick twirl and it rotates smoothly but no sign of life, after cleaning the earth
and pickup brushes and sliprings cleaning and adjusting the points I could feel resistance about were
the spark was expected, at this point a ht lead and plug would likely have been a good idea but no
not me, I stick a screw driver in the ht pickup earth the shaft to the mag body and give the points
a spin.
Holy defibrillator bat man, there was a click and a bright blue spark a good half inch long, I have never
had a crack like that off a mag before, talk about jump, this thing will either start the bike or start a fire,
I am going to have the ends off and check the bearings then fit it to the NG as the one on always seemed
to be a bit lacking in the spark dept, if I ever find the screw driver that is, it disappeared out of my
hand at the exact moment I got that first spark.

Mag was playing up on the WNC so I decided to fit the spare, then decided to
see if I could quieten the engine as you do, I always thought it was valve
gear related end float on the cam being a suspect, anyway pulled the timing
case and there is about 20 thou end float and a little lash in the gears, pulled
the cam and though the cam looks ok the followers have flats, it's a 2 lobe F
type cam I have a later 2 lobe that is in good nick but is a longer duration
A6/644? or something of that I have some more followers but will have
to find them though at least one set is a forked set, so I will go through my
bits see what I have and see if I can come up with a working set up,
without the cam the engine spins smooth and quiet, more later and likely
some questions as to what will work with what.

Re: The Beast lives
The A6/664 cam will give you a lot better performance than the F cam, although the engine will not be so "soft".

Re: The Beast lives
Thanks for that it looks like followers and push rods will be ok are the cams usually shimmed
no shims fitted to mine will have to stick the A6 in and see how much float there is.

Re: The Beast lives
I have seen a shim on a singles camshaft but I can't remember when or why. Personally, I haven't used one for the past half century or so, during which I have knocked up a lot of miles on Ariel singles.

Re: The Beast lives
Well it's back running, A6 cam and reasonable followers a lot of the clatter as gone
but I can hear the timing gears whining a fair bit, though they are quietening down
as it is run, changed the mag and that gives a better spark, it runs and ticks over
steadily, will give it a few short rides next week and see how it goes.

Re: The Beast lives
Well it pulls like a train much more go than with the F type cam, first kick starter and a steady tick over,
It has a whine from I think the timing gears that seems to be getting quieter and it disappears at slightly
faster revs took me by surprise how fast it can accelerate, a few more miles are called for then decide
on the next move.
