1948 KG 500. The first year of Ariel's new twin. And this bike has all those unique 1948/9 features like the "ARIEL TWIN" timing cover, the shaped / contoured Lucas dynamo, early crankshaft & cases, CP gearbox ('48 only), poor turning circle etc.
I bought the KG from Venture Classics just over 3 years ago. It was originally exported and brought back to the UK in the 1960s where it was stored. In 2008, it was purchased by Colin Reed-Aspley* who restored it in 2012. I have Colin's original photos of the un-restored bike plus a load of paperwork between 2012 and now, including more data from the couple who owned it after Colin and before me.
*in case you don't know Colin, for many years he was the Ariel Owners Motor Cycle Club (AOMCC) Twin Spares expert. I need say no more!
In my 3 years of ownership, I've
- rebuilt the CP gearbox with new selector forks, sliding gears etc
- renewed the clutch plates
- fitted a new correct Amal carb from Burlen (276DA/1DU)
- fitted new fork seals, seal holder and bushes
- fitted new piston rings
- fitted a Drags cartridge oil filter kit
- fitted an Ariel side stand
- new chains, front and back
