350NH Modern engine replacement

Post by matthew.hindmoor »

Hi All
I’m new to this so please bare with me. I have a 1954 NH I want to get running but I can’t operate a kick start.
Does anybody recommend or have you installed a modern single engine with electric start to an Ariel.
Any suggestions very welcome
Thanks, Matt

There's one in Australia that's been on the road for years There's plenty of room so any simple single will fit. Why not just get the Matchless with the Rotax engine in it They are around and not expensive. Sell the NH as it is. You will be on the road a lot quicker and have a good" balanced" bike Nev

it's worth thinking about that if you chuck in a modern engine, then you really need far better brakes to go with the additional performance.

Your 54 might have half width hub brakes ? They're ok (for an old britishj bike) and can be improved a bit, but there isn't a TLS or hydraulic conversion for them.
Of course, you can lace in a modern wheel or change the forks and complete front end .. etc etc .. but at that point, you may as well have bought something a little more modern ...

Enfield put an electric start onto their "classic engine" (and a five speed box) in early/mid 2000's before moving to EFI ? Decent brakes too ..

HI I have seen the nh with Suzuki or Yamaha engines with electric starters they look nice and ride good i am thinking of doing one my self and the ones i have rode the brakes are OK it depends how mad you want to go on it i will leave the brakes standard i know a lot will not like the idea of doing the change but i like it makes a nice bike to rid and no oil leaks and it make it a lot lighter and you can change it back to sell it all the ones i have seen for sale got sold very quick 8-)

You want to check the regs too.....one time ,nobody cared what you did with a bike (law wise),now there are all sorts of crazy laws (here anyway) against alterations......designed by plod to clear the bikies off the road, with their choppers ,3ft wide tires etc.....One traditional way around is to register it with the Ariel motor, then do the swap...if I understand UK regs, there is no MOT for old bikes.

Here's a special from Oz. Would you call it a Yamariel or an Arielaha?
