It all depending on; do you want to use it all year, what is the budged and in wich country you are.
Cheap all year; BMW K75 or any model.
Also offroading; KTM 350 freeride to 600, Spain and eastblock; Yamaha XT 250 - 600.

My pensioners favorit is 1983 Honda CL250s or Yamaha XG 250 tricker.

If it did get up there it could charge back up again going back down

Well, I hate to say it, but what about a V strom 650? Ugly as whatever, but they have a fantastic reputation, light, good for passengers, cruise all day.. I have a mate who has one. Personally, I think he has lost it, but he raves about it.

Adrie, I don't know what people like about the Suzuki's, but they have a strong following. Not really a light trail bike I agree.

I had a modern bonneville - looked ace but, like you found, bland as you like. I had an early 80's ironhead sportster, went like a rocket up to 60mph and then turned into a jackhammer ..I've got ariels which easily go that fast.

I really don't want anything that looks modern-ish ...

I always liked te enfield conti GT and the second hand price, with bugger all miles, is quite attractive ?

But will it hold a motorway speed and woudl it be any better than my T140 .. ?
I tend to keep the bikes I like for a vary long time and the hassle of buying and selling is rubbish ...

Itoo wonder about the new interceptors but I suspect light flywheel and buzzy engine (like nearly every other modern bike ):
