SA1

Unfortunately a photo of a photo. Vincent, this might be one for your originality eye ;)
At least some of it looks to be circa 1951. The number plate somewhat earlier.
This was a well known bike in Adelaide in the 70's. Built by Frank Jarvis, who I understand was chief mechanic at Bolton's, the Ariel importer.
I think the bike went to Victoria some years ago. I'm not sure if it is still in one piece.

I guess this was quite a challenge to build... :)

A very, very, fine tribute indeed to the interchangeability of Ariel parts.

This bike was mentioned in Cheval: April 1985 on p22.
Looks like Frank had the number plate for a long while, SA1 was stolen in 1954.
Here is a clipping from the "Adelaide News" 23 March 1954 p30.
We can assume he recovered it.
My (unreliable) spies tell me it stayed in the family, initially at least, and got a girder fork.
Don't know its current status.

Thanks Adrian!
Frank had a son Steve, who was an excellent trials rider.
John Byles, one of your register members, has the original photo. He tells me the person who bought the sloper rallied it regularly, but has since also passed away. Maybe someone from the register would know it's whereabouts?
While only a young bloke when this article was written, I knew Graham Tremellan reasonably well. He put together some motors for my dad, including his, now my '51 square. He was very knowledgeable with square fours and had several Mk2's. I spoke to his son Paul a few years ago and all the bikes were sold on. Paul had a black Mk2 with a 4 into 4 megaphone exhaust. Very nice.
John Byles has Graham's '54 NH (actually a KH with NH motor). I wonder who in the UK has his squares?
Having not thought too much about any of this for 30 years or so, all this reminds me that 1. we're just custodians of our bikes and 2. if I don't get off my butt soon, I'll have pegged out without building and riding those 'projects' over in the shed and someone else will have all the fun :)

Dunno about SA,but in the eastern states, people who had these early rego numbers were "relieved" of them ,and given the option to buy them back at crazy prices when the states decided to cash in on the british numbers trade.....even the number on my pocket valve, seemingly commonplace Q32-996,was valued at $1000 by the Main Roads.......I told them what they could do with it.

IN the UK the Q number plate would not be worth a lot it given to you re reg some vehicles that a kit or built of parts not over 80 percent of new parts
