Re: Mangled sludge trap plug
Bike looked like this (£500 18 months back).
Crank output shaft on the primary side was shot (some sort of metric nut had been forced on), so luckily i had to have the crank out anyway.
The plug was actually pretty loose - I don't think the perpetrator could torque it up with a head that mangled....

Early 1954 VH, it won't be easy to find the carb connection rubber.

Re: Mangled sludge trap plug
nah.. KS1247.
You are assuming, of course, that I care about originality over use.
I have a concentric, with a gauze on it (no air filter). Cost outweighed originality
I am fitting a sidecar to it at the moment and having a 'mare ....

Re: Mangled sludge trap plug
You are well with in the new sidecar rules; not wider than 255 cm. not higher than 400 cm..
I have tried a sidecar with an old Ariel on it,(free on the ferry), only to find out that it's not the best way of transporting.
Something strange with your frontforks.

Came with it ....
Makes the bike sit higher, when on the main stand, and the fork springs are exposed.
When it is fuly attached (or even off the stand) it's ok.
It is on the stand, at the moment, as I am still sorting out the fittings.

Re: Mangled sludge trap plug
When fully lifted my forklegs are not exposed.
Maybe your forklegs are longer, (BSA)?

Re: Mangled sludge trap plug
Hi John, yes but when the forks "move" a little during the time they are extended - which is more likely with the sidecar - and the spring covers land on the seal covers...
Of course, this will create an excellent topic for "a bad thing happened"... If I was riding, this would be at the moment of losing control, going bush and getting airborne!
This was pretty much my first sidecar experience (the losing control, going bush bit).
I am the proud owner of a number of bikes that were collected from stations in our north, and have an NH that has done just this to the forks.
Having said that, I've never paid much attention to whether other Ariels do the muffin top thingy, or why?
Cheers, Brenton

Re: Mangled sludge trap plug
I've done that before. I just ".... hooked up the sidecar and went" (on my russian outfit, before I knew about toe in and lean) .. and "went" i did, down the track, through the undergrowth and into a tree.
My fork springs are not exposed, when my bike is off it's stand.
I've had this discussion with the local AOMCC lads and everything is what it should be. We think.
My 1947 ariel exposes it's springs when it's up in the air on the little lift but not quite as much ..
I am going to wait and see what the handing is like ..... I may need tougher springs anyway ......
I had the watsonian with the 1947 ariel but the wooden body was shot to pieces. The chassis, brakes and fittings have taken me around 30 hours of freeing up, cleaning, painting and test fitting so far.
I had a velorex 562, with a triumph 3TA (sold), but the chassis wasn't velorex. It's taken maybe a couple of days work to flat that back, paint it and sort out all the bits and pieces.
However, so far it's cost me NOTHING. (something I like to hear)
