Different size Ansti stirrup

Post by IWallis »

Hello, silly question really, I have two sets of Ansti plunger stirrups, one set looks about 7mm longer than the other.
I didn't realise there were different lengths. I'm guessing that the design changed over time, or perhaps different lengths for various model bikes; or could it be that it's just one of those manufacturing oddity's that happen? :)

There are two basic types....1939-49 type.and 1950 on type......easily identified as the early type have equal length axle mount bits, whereas the 1950 type ,the axle mount is extended on the lower part,as a sort of a spur........Many associated parts are different too.......I have no doubt the Draganfly site has chapter and verse on the details............Incidentally ,the spur is of great assistance when trying to refit a non detach wheel in the dark, and many quality bikes ,rigid ,plunger and S/A have the feature.

It's ANSTEY or ansty, named after the designer who designed a few other thing on bikes and cars I think as well. Just for the record. I'm having a bit of a time chasing up the details .Nev

The early type with snail cam adjusters on the axle (4980-39, 4982-39) has a longer lower axle fork although, somewhat confusingly, the 1939-46 workshop manual shows equal length stirrup in the illustration whereas the 1939 and 1946 parts books show longer lower forks. The 1st picture below is from my 39 4G.

The later type with a screw adjuster in the top of the stirrup (4980-50, 4982-50) has equal length forks. The Draganfly drawings appear to show the late type stirrup for both early and late type Anstey.

There is also listed a third type (4980-57, 4982-57) presumably used on late square fours.

Ansti Anstey, iceberg Goldberg, same thing..... :D

Thank you for the excellent information.

Both sets of stirrups that I have, don't have a spur, and use a screw adjuster.

The Anstey rear suspension takes it's name from the designer Frank Anstey who was employed by Ariel in 1939 but was previously employed by Rudge.

The third type (4980-57, 4982-57) is aluminium.
Thanks for the info.

Just a throw in - In my experience I prefer to use the later stirrup with the threaded adjusters... the snail cams can be swines to adjust and tend to slip, particularly if the machine has a chair..
I put an add for my old ones in some yonks back... still no takers...

Any idea what the stirrup bolt thread is?
