bent con rods

Post by Danny.Lee »

Hi all,

my basket case VB goes from bad to worse. Got the crank out and having cleaned everything started
looking closely, looks like the con rod is bent just below the gudgeon pin eye and may also be
twisted relative to the big end as well. Wont know till I get the wheels appart ( waiting on some whit sockets) I will
then turn up some mandrels to place in big end and small end eye and measure up to see tru extent of the problem.

Irving in Tuning for Speed mentions bending con rods, but has anyone tried it? how? what result?

Danny

Take the small end bush out as well check offset as well as parallel and twist. Crack test when finished. I straighten them all the time. Press with soft bars/spacers. Don't rely on a mandrel in the small end eye. You will distort the eye. The metal is EN 26 ( or similar). Nev

Thanks Nev thats just the kind of info I need, I know the theory but its better to hear from someone who's actually done it. How do you crack test your work?

I get a mate to do it Magnaflux or a dye check. (He works with aircraft) . I ued to do the dye check myself. You would be surprised how many are cracked. Ariel rods are pretty good. Polish out any nicks or scratches. Nev

Hi,
Since we are on the topic of rods, would this rod be repairable or is it good for the bin?
The small photo shows the damage from the other side.

Thanks for any help.
