Suitable carb
Hi all could anyone tell me if this newly accuired amal 89 carb would be suitable to fit to my 1936 vh to replace the amal 289 that is presently fitted to her. It is stamped 89/014 and also the throttle slide is numbered on the top 29/5. I am thinking of having it cleaned up and checked over with new jets and such but I am not quite sure if its the right sort and period one that would have originally be fitted. Best regards Nick
Re: Suitable carb
Nick,
According to the Amal documentation for 1936, 89/14 is the correct carb for the VH. Specifications are 200 main jet, 29/3 slide and needle clip in slot 3.
The 289 carb is a later model, very similar to the 89 but lacking the separate air intake holes in the body that are visible in your pic. It seems during the war they found dirt was entering through these (unfiltered) holes in dusty conditions, so they were eliminated.
