Tyres

Post by Keith.owen »

Hi there Arielists,

I am looking for some advice hopefully based upon practical experience.

The tyres on my bike are at least thirty six years old and although thet reads are fine they must be replaced. The machine is a 1950 VH with the larger thinner front wheel. The rear wheel has a dulop tyre and the front is a ribbed Avon.

The quetion is, and given that tyres are one thing that I will never skimp on, what is the best possble tyre selection available for slippery conditions?

A couple of years ago I replaced the tyres on the 37NH. The old square shaped rear Avon SM always made me a bit suspicious and I wanted a round profile with classic looking treads and chose....

Rear : Dunlop Gold Seal K70 19x3.25
Front : Avon Speedmaster 20x3.00

With the new tyres the ability and willingness to turn at the mere thought is perfect for green lane riding and for avoiding obstacles during a high speed corner. Regarding grip, I've never had a situation where they have let me down and there has been much spritited riding. My boots will scrape on the corners and this is as far as I dare go over and there have been a few emergency situations on the mucky roads of Exmoor where I've had the grip to survive another day.

Your 1950 will have the later telescopic forks so I can't promose that my experience will translate exactly.
