W/NG front wheel

Here we go again. Because I don't have one wheel that I definitively know is 100% correct, I am left wondering WTH?! This drawing shows two different nuts that don't show in the Draganfly, Type 2-Girder Fork 1939-46 parts list.

I may have these nuts in my collection but do not know the exact dimensions to check. Wondering why these nuts do not show on other axles besides the W/NG. Anyone up on this?

# 14, an abutment nut, I am guessing is a brake plate locator.

#21, a bearing adjustment nut.

Wade as far as I know the front wheel of a W/NG is quite a differend story compared to the other half width Ariel hubs. There where two diff. types of W/NG hubs, steel items and cast iron. The W/NG front hubs also do not have the same amount of spokes as on a ''normal wheel'' it is 40 spokes, but the W/NG does have 36 spokes. Don's ask me why... I think the same counts for the diamter of the axle and the nuts. I know that the nuts and the diameter of the front wheel on my W/NG are diff. compared to other Ariel half widt hubs...

Paul, the picture I posted is from the ARMM-WNG Maintenance Manual & Instruction Book. There is no date on this publication. I have never seen pictures of the sheet metal hub compared to the cast hub. Obviously there was a shift to cast in early 41. As far as the difference between axle hardware, I just don't know why #14 and #21 nuts only show up in this Maintenance Manual. I am happy to leave them off if they are not necessary.

my w/ng with the cast Qualcast drum has the shouldered nut no14 the other mentioned I'm sure is also shouldered to go into the felt oil seal holder and is used for adjustment, kind regards

The cast type is unmistakeably different from the "standard" girder fork front hub on the other models. It has a front wheel speedo drive and it has a 1/2" axle which is a lot shorter. The whole bike is the 1938 ISDT with a field stand added on the LH side. If you are going for lightness a 36 spoke wheel is logical. I'm having trouble getting those 36 spoke rims. here in Australia. The 18" Honda front wheel/TLS brake I sold to Ken Drinkwater had 36 spokes.

Maybe a Honda Dealer would be able to help.

(Hopefully they have 19" rims with the same 9 x 4 spoke configuration).

Hi Wade,

Last april I found at Central Classics a 19"- rim for 36 spokes. The seller told me, it was from a pre worldwar II BMW, manufactured in the thirties.
The angle of the spokes to the hub seems to fit well.

re the 36 spoked front wheel rims, thanks to those who replied. Velocettes tended to have them also. It's a WM2 width. Some Japanese rims have flatter sides than the original Dunlop and Jones rims. Nev
