Ariel W/NG SMD666 Bells Auction Sale Inspection

Post by robert.clark »

I have just returned from the viewing - for the auction tomorrow 9th Sept for the Ariel 350 WNG 1943. The details were in last months magazine.

Being fairly local to the event I'm just sharing the details.

95% complete unrestored having a tax disc dated 1952. Frame no XG44230 Engine BH33233.
No magneto - no long side stand. Inside petrol tank rust free. Paint work tatty but not rotted away. Speedo to front wheel drive intact.
Rear bum seat fitted so no rear mudguard carrier. reg SWD666

It's a viable project and not been messed about just left in the dry for many years.

Last lot 616 of Saturday's auction

There's also a 1959 Ariel Leader TET602 - It's in good order - turns over and looks a good project. Pretty complete and not rusted through the panels or panniers. Lot 615

Postcode for the sale LN4 1HZ - its well signposted. I should add I have no interests whatsoever in the auction or the people
involved.

Going to pop over tomorrow for a look. Will be interesting to see what the various tanks and engines are for.

Hi Andy,

I had a good sift through the lots. The engines, wheels, tanks, spares etc are all Francis Barnet related. If you see the web page there are probably 12 + FB's bikes in various states.
I did spot a Arrow/Leader frame maybe two but that was it Ariel wise. They appeared to be rust free. Its probably worth going just to see the amount of "stuff" a person can collect over time. Hats off to the persons who arranged it all into lots.

My advice is to take wellies the place was a quagmire and thats just after viewing day. Also be prepared to walk a fair distance as there's little parking on the almost single track country roads.

Nothing there worth waiting and bidding on. Loads of people who know what they want looking at the stationary engines so I think they will fetch good money.

Some pics for everyone

The W/NG went for £3,300 plus commission of £258. I bought a couple of cheap crates of Francis Barnett bits for a friend and when we went through them we found a marmalade tin marked 'Ariel Clutch' which was filled to the brim with clutch inserts.....

More than I would have wanted to pay for it but I hope it has gone to a good home.

Would have loved to have stayed and watched what stuff sold for but rain and having my son with me made it a pain to just watch.

You had a lucky escape Andi, the rain became torrential once the W/NG had sold, the mud became deeper and even 4X4s got stuck in it. Removing the lots I bought was an absolute nightmare as vehicles and people floundered in the mud and I had to carry heavy crates of engine bits about 150 yards down the road to where I was parked! Having said that I was happy to find the tin of clutch inserts........
