Fork seals

Post by simon.holyfield »

Chaps,

When fitting the fork seal holders to my '51 SQ4, how much thread should be left showing? I have 1/8" left - and they don't feel they want to go any further...
cheers

Hi Simes, they screw up all the way.
I had a look at a couple of seal holders I've had re chromed and there's some roughness (well, crap) around the threads. Maybe yours have this too?

Threads were ok. Turns out the modern oil seals (covered in rubber) are a larger OD than the old type, with the metal ring exposed - so they won't seat in the carriers.

Fixed now, don't ask how!
cheers

I'm sure an experienced engineer such as yourself would have found an appropriate fix...
