I have had oil, not huge amounts but enough to coat the bottom of the frame coming from the breather pipe, is this normal?

A small amount of oil from the breather is normal. To help prevent it coming out of the pipe, you can extend it with a robber hose , the engine will still breath but the oil then tends not to exit the pipe so readily.
