1938 ISDT RH
Nice article on a genuine Dutch 1938 RH ISDT (Llandrindod Wells, Wales) competition model in the latest issue of Het Motorrijwiel.
special tank, I dont think it's a welded up panel tank, but why is the filler cap in that position?
cant get the pic the right way up.- Eero.Korhonen

Becouse it's a paneltank without the panel.Vincent.vanGinneke wrote:but why is the filler cap in that position?
There is an other 1938 ISDT Ariel in the netherlands, in the same condition, also with oilfeed to the bottem of the barrel only that's fead by a 1931 driptank hanging next to the battery.
These are 2 of 3 delivered to Stokvis Holland but collected from the factory, i have the frame numbers.
You can see a picture of these winning a gold vase in the 1939 modelbook.
Altough one bronze head VH was delivered to England for the ISDT it never entered the list, not even one English VH.

G'day All,
Thanks for posting this interesting pictorial Vincent.
You may be interested to know that a friend of mine in Brisbane, Australia has an identical fuel tank to the one in this posting. This tank has promoted much head scratching over the years so it's great to finally track down it's origins! I think you can be fairly certain that at least one of these rare machines was delivered to Australia.
Regards,
John

Re: 1938 ISDT RH
Thanks John, Adrie, that's interesting to know! nice when things fall together this way.
Long ago I made a picture of a open valve bronze head 500 at a annual in Norwich (showground?, late eighties?)
I remember the Speckeld Hen ale, and a Huntmaster going round the dining area inside with others clinging on to the carrier...
But I digress, I think the bike belonged then to Tony Peglar (hope I got his name correct )
I try to find it, it had the same type of petrol tank, but from memory it lacked the oil pressure gauge.

Re: 1938 ISDT RH
Been thinking about this tank cap position.
Odd to have the tankcap in the 'paneltank' position when there is no panel .
So....could it be that it is in this position because you could then monitor the fuel level easier?
On my NG with paneltank I'ts easy to take a look, sometimes on the move, with the cap in the middle it more difficult to judge the level.
can I have my platinum anorak now please?

Re: 1938 ISDT RH
You need a torch to see the level in my SQ4 tank (central filler, no panel) when its low.
I wouldn't worry about it but I have a single-level tap fitted, no reserve...

Re: 1938 ISDT RH
Is there the equivalent of a 'Pit-stop' in the ISDT ??
Would it be easier for the Mechanic/helper to fill the tank quickly with the filler in this position ??
There might be less chance of a spill onto a hot engine ??
Bob.

Yes, could be for a quick pit stop !
Pictures from 1993 annual,bronze head 500.
This is a short tank (350) but also with the fillercap on the left.

Hi Adrie you mentioned, oil feed to the bottom of the barrel . I have a 38 VH engine with this feature under my bench. were they always fed by drip feed? Keith.
