1936 VG Voltage Regulator

Post by stuart.munroe »

Was a voltage regulator fitted to this bike? The only place I haven't looked in the headlamp.

I'm not sure when the change came from 3 brush to the regulated 2 brush By 1937 Norton had the later type (single field pole retaining screw.). The standard position for the ARIEL mount for the regulator is under the seat. Nev

Are there any wiring diagrams available for the three brush bikes?

Probably , but it is quite simple to change the later circuit. You eliminate anything to do with the regulator. FADE connections. Your generator is earthed (Should be) just run the wire from the generator (after the internal relay) to the ammeter. Adjust the third brush to the current you require after flashing the generator to install a minimum magnetic effect to get it to function initially. If you have bench run the gen.or motored it, no need for any other action. Nev

I have just consulted my Haycraft's Book of The Ariel and it states that the 3rd brush system was used up to 1936. So 1937 was the start of the 2 brush system with voltage regulator box mounted under the saddle. Being a purist I would be inclined to retain the 3rd brush system. The light switch had 4 positions, Off, (lamps off and dynamo not charging), C, (charge at 1/2 normal output), H, ( headlamp and tail light on and full charge 4 to 5 amps). L, (park and tail lights on and dynamo on full charge. (There was a coiled wire resister connected across two switch terminals to reduce the charge rate). I have a wiring diagram but there should be one in the system somewhere

You will probably have less trouble with it than having the regulator which must be set up dead right to work consistently. Nev

If the frame has the 2 supports under the sadle for the regulator it's 2 brush, if not it's 3 brush.
