VB piston missing a bit

Post by klaus gerhard »

I am in the process of preparing my recently purchased VB for the italian Rally next week. It started and ticked over yesterday but smoked heavily from the exhaust. I thought the oilpump is not pumping back to the tank propperly.
So I took the timingcover off to find many aluminium particles. Off with the sump plate to find even more and bigger aluminium particles. Then I decided to take the VB's barrel off to find a piston missing a bit. See the photos!

I had a word with our single spares organizer. Hope he can find me a nice replacement Piston.

Best regards
Klaus

In my humble opinion, the piston might get you there but I would advise that it is distinctly life expired so should most certainly be replaced.

It certainly does make you wonder about thermal slot pistons. I have seen numerous failures, but the normal method if failure is for the top to come off the piston with a break extending horizontally from the thermal slots. Such failures are generally however in higher performing engines. I would not have expected a failure in the VB. The piston in my VB is a Hepolite T slot that came from Single Spares, ouch.

Thought you might like to see another VB piston that did the same thing! It happened about 30 years ago, but I keep it as a souvenir! Like yours, it kept going but the bits of aluminium in the tank gauze filter alerted me.
