Update on the crankcase, a 1927 Ariel crankcase with 2 plates welded on (not by me) will do the job, there is a lot of machining before it's looking like a J.A.P. crankcase
but I will get there in the end.
but I will get there in the end.

That's a lovely job - I wish I could weld alloy as well as that .
Did you consider making a wooden pattern and then sand-casting a new crankcase ?? I seems that there is a lot of work in either approach.
As a matter of interest . . When using a forked + plain conrod pair in a common-crankpin motor - does it matter which conrod goes in front ??
I'm looking forward to following this, its a fascinating project .
More power to you.
Bob.

The crankcase is ready, before and after pictures, the alu breather tube will become copper when I find it.

Patern making and casting is only usefull if you have the originals so making 10 and than selling 8.Bob.Murphy wrote:Did you consider making a wooden pattern and then sand-casting a new crankcase ?
Always being interested in having the first OHV motorcycle engine in England, the 1904 JAP single, now was the chance to make it in to a Vtwin, don't know if JAP made it but looking at the offset of the cam they must have had this in mind, these barrels can be made from solid cast iron so that's what I am doing now.
This could be the last update this year before a trialling vacation in the south of Spain, strange thing there are thousends of English pensionado's there but I have never met one offroading.
A healty new year to you all.

The JAP single appears to have an Atmospheric Inlet Valve, will the 'V-Twin' have the same ???
Loving this (and love that lathe, mine is a bit old (1950s) and worn) .
