LATE 58 SINGLE TANK KNEE GRIPS FITTING

Post by ian.paseka »

I hope to restore a tank for a 1958 NH. I have never had the knee grips off a late tank. I would like to know how they are fitted to the tank. I suspect that the chrome surround screws onto the tank and the rubber is then pushed into the surrounding frame. I would appreciate any help with this.
Thanks Ian

The alloy surrounds are just sandwiched between the tank and knee grips, there are no screws, but I suppose you could silicone them on if you choose.

When replacing the knee grips I found using a bit of para cord fed in to the head of the knee grip helps to seat them (like you would fit a window to an old car) this worked on mine and 1000+ miles later is still fine.

Let me know if you need any more explanation or anything.

Cheers

Ian,
As Rob says, the alloy trims are sandwiched between the rubber grips and tank, the grips being carefully stretched over a flange plate welded to each side of the tank. The tanks are prone to rust badly around the flange plates as water can get trapped.

Keith.

Thanks for your help. I now understand what I am missing is the flange plates. On the tank I have they are missing and the welding marks have been sanded and filled. I notice that there are some NEW ARIEL 350CC PETROL TANK KNEE PAD'S MOUNTING PLATES (REPRODUCTION) on ebay from India. I think I will stick the knee pads onto the tank directly with a contact adhesive like Evostick without the flange plates.

If you go down the line of gluing the rubbers on I can recommend this stuff, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/15107667 ... =83&ff19=0

I've used this stuff to glue on some small pieces of leather to my tank to prevent cables damaging the paintwork.

Thanks for your advice – I have worked out how to bond the grips to the tank with the chrome surrounds in place. I will take your tip and get the butyl sealant you recommend.
Thanks Ian
