Painted & lined rims
Hi peoples - I wish to get a pair of rims painted and lined for my '49 Mk1
to match tank & gold pinstripes - (don't care if it shouldn't have had them!)...
Please can someone detail the widths of the bandings so I can get the rims painted before I have the hubs re-spoked, thanks.
Also please; - suggestions for paint types to be used, thanks, John.

Re: Painted & lined rims
The colour covers the section where the dimples are, the lining should be applied by hand and is about 1/8" wide, designed to cover the sharp edge twixt chrome and main colour. Paint type is personal preference of you or your painter but do the tank and rims at the same time so the colour matches. Do rough up the chrome and use an etch primer.

Dulling off the centre is a difficult task. You might consider masking the bit you don't wish to paint first to have a definite edge. Nev

Re: Painted & lined rims
I once dulled the centre of some rims by carefully masking the outer edges, and then blasting myself with fine glass beads. Stainless rims.

Thanks gents for the suggestions of blasting the stainless first - will chat with my painter...
Re: Painted & lined rims
Hi
Keying the surface to be painted by blasting, scoring or etch priming are all examples of best practice, abrasive methods are very time consuming and I'm not sure etch prime was in general use at the time. Has anyone stripped an original rim and found evidence that Ariel did any of these at manufacture?
Not suggesting that the surface shouldn't be keyed, just musing.
Regards Mick

Re: Painted & lined rims
I have seen rims with the chrome in the spoke area not polished.

It's not worth rechroming poor rims. They never come up well and you're throwing good money after Bad. Nev
