Is E5 petrol cheaper than E10? - perhaps

Post by paul.jameson »

I went into the garage today to buy petrol. First I filled two cans for the mower with E5 at £174.9/litre. Then I came to fill the car and the thought struck me that with E10 at £169.9/litre, the better mileage per gallon offered by the E10 would outweigh the 5p/litre difference in price.

Long term, the car has been doing almost 40mpg. Now it is doing 36.3mpg. If I assume I am only losing 3mpg by use of E10, I am still losing 7.5% of my mpg. At £1.70 per litre for E10, plus 7.5%, the equivalent cost of E10 is £1.83. So my E5 at £1.75 was 8p per litre cheaper. Putting it another way, if the difference in cost between E5 and E10 is less than 13p/litre, I am going to be better off using E5.

We were out riding near Cambridge in Gloucestershire on Sunday , and came across a small garage selling 4 star ! I only needed 3 litres to top up, good job as it was £2:30 a litre !

What ever way, we are still being robbed at those prices, E5 or E10. Shameful.
