1944 Full Colour cinefilm showing WNG C5491281

Post by alan.moore »

Came across this : https://player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/wat ... 944-online

The link takes you to the British Film Institute website. The WNG appears about 12 seconds in. I have managed to capture the video but as it is copyright I cannot upload it to YouTube. However, I was able to view it frame by frame and I have captured the most clear images and uploaded them here.
Research shows the parade took place in Cambridge on 8th May 1944 and was one of many throughout the country to raise money for the war effort.

The WNG contract number C5491281, according to Drags WNG contracts list, was despatched from the factory between 31/12/43 and 7/09/44 so was 'newish' at the time the cinefilm was shot (I am sure someone will put this right if my interpretation is wrong :) )
I haven't seen many, if any, colour period images so this footage should be really useful. You can gauge the bikes colour in the early stills when compared with the green hedge and the riders khaki uniform.

Some good pointers to what was original finish at this time. I am sure the eagle eyed will spot even more, if so please post them here.

Primary case, clutch case and timing case painted green
Rear lamp and contract plate rear mudguard
rocker boxes not painted
pushrod tubes not painted but silver coloured ..cadmium plate?
silver painted exhaust and silencer
girder damper star washers and adjustment nut not painted ..cadmium?
control levers / choke/air/mag not painted...possible plain brass finish
handlebar levers appear painted
Twistgrip body not painted
canvas handlebar grips (ferrules at ends?) The grips also look very long and are open ended
nuts on girder spindles not painted nor those on headlamp bracket
painted brake rod but not the upper cable/spring cover
Petrol tank cap not painted
crankcases not painted

Yes only captured these as other frames were blurred because it has been digaitised from cinefilm footage. Just to reiterate this was shot in colour not a colourised black and white film.

Hi Luis, These are the ones I used for Burney, they come close to what they originally where.
