Odd carburettor on the W/NG

Post by Michael.Brown »

Hi all,

I have been having a check over of my new acquisition, a 1942 W/NG and have found that it is fitted with an Amal 276/434R and not the 275B/IJ I expected.

What bike was fitted with the 276/434R originally?

Will it run happily on it?

It will certainly go better, you will also benifit from putting in a decent cam.

I'm not sure what your carburettor is from, but from your picture the float chamber looks OK and the carb is a 276.

I'd have a look at the jetting and the slide but if it starts, idles and runs OK I wouldn't worry too much.

There's a thread on here somewhere with a list of modifications people make to W/NGs, which as Dave says includes the cam.

Mine is faster than my Bantam, but not much. Actually the speedo reads about 10% low, so maybe I am being a bit unfair!

Thanks Dave and Simon,

It starts first kick, idles fine and runs nicely so I will leave alone for the moment. Is the 276 a bigger bore?

As I get to know the bike a little better I will find out more. You never know it might have a different cam in it already.

Only thing that requires attention at the moment is the charging. I have been told it was fine but on the test run it wasn't charging. The regulator is supposed to be an electronic one but I have yet to check that out. I will check the Dynamo output...........................what is the best way?

Battery is past its best so will replace that to.

If I recall correctly the 276 is 1"; the 275 is 7/8". Coincidentally, my W/NG runs a 276 from a Triumph 3HW, though its jetted for a W/NG.

The story is on my blog, a few posts back.
cheers
