D-Day 75 ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIVE DRIVE
On 5 June 1944, General Dwight D Eisenhower travelled from D-Day HQ at
Southwick House to Greenham Common, where he met troops including 502 PIR
(Parachute Infantry Regiment). This regiment was part of the 101st
Airborne Division, and was in the first wave leaving Greenham Common on the
night of 5 June to spearhead OPERATION OVERLORD, the Allied invasion of
Occupied France. The first paratroopers jumped at 00:16 hours on 6 June.
In 2017 a major event was delivered on the remaining section of runway at
former USAAF / USAF Greenham Common AAF 486, Newbury, Berkshire. Building
on the success of this event, it is planned to commemorate the 75th
Anniversary of D-Day by staging a re-run of the route travelled by
Eisenhower from Southwick to Greenham. This will take place on Saturday 22
June (D+16) in 2019.
The convoy starts at Southwick PO17 6EJ and travels to former RAF Lasham
near ALTON GU34 5SS (approx. 25 miles) for a stopover. At this site other
vehicles can join the convoy and it is planned to have a high profile venue
in Basingstoke RG19 8RZ for the same purpose. The destination is Greenham
Common (approx. 24 miles from Lasham) where an event will be held to
commemorate and reflect on that fateful day in 1944.
The Royal British Legion Riders’ Branch (RBLR) will have a stand at
Greenham Common, and would like to have some WW2 motorcycles either take
part in the run, or form part of a display at the stand.
