Paul the iron sq4 is a joy to ride with a lovely engine.
I'm sure you will enjoy as long as keep it.

Paul,
What a disappointment that must have been to see the masking tape remove the paint. I can feel your pain! I admire your restoration prowess and I can't be the only member of this Forum who is inspired by your accomplishments,
keep up the good work,
Regards, Chris

An update after doing it's first 120 miles:

Initially (first 20 miles) had a few ignition problems when hot and assumed it was the mag, so had the armature re-wound by Paul at APL (just up the road from me). Turned out to be the wrong grade of plugs, so switched from Champion L82C to NGK BP5HS and all my problems went away.

For the last 100 miles:
Starts really easy on the Bi-Starter once you remember not to touch the throttle.
Super smooth.
Very powerful with rapid acceleration with those 1000cc and high compression pistons (150 psi on all pistons when hot).
Plugs dry but sooty on nearside and dry and sandy colour on offside; getting better all the time and much less smoke now.
45-50 psi on Oil Pressure gauge, hot and cold, with the Morgo pump and cartridge oil filter kit. Currently on straight 40 but might change to 20/50.
Fairly oil tight.
Fitted the correct high-back saddle but it does push you towards the tank slightly.
It's heavy :(

Looking forward to the next 100 miles....a photo from yesterday

An update.

After today's run, I've now done a total of 315 miles on the 4G and all seems to be well..better than I expected if I'm honest. For the last 80 miles, I've been running it on Halfords Classic 20/50 oil, same as my '48 KG which also has shell bearings and a cartridge filter --- both bikes seem to like this oil. I have 60 psi on the gauge when hot and the bike only smokes a little when idling, never at speed.

The modified Royal Enfield side stand works a treat and has been so useful that I've fitted a second on to my '38 VH.

Hi,
I wonder if someone has a toolbox for my sq4 plunger from 1939. They are a bit smaller than the ones on the ridged. Maybe somebody has taken the challenge to make new ones..
Regards
Henning
