New clutch/ mashing of teeth W/NG

Post by stevewhitt »

I have been able to try my rebuilt clutch today (rebuilt plates and increased to 3 from 2 and new operating rod).

When engaging 1st gear, it is not particularly smooth with a slight mashing of the teeth; I can engage all gears though.

As far as I can tell, I have the adjustments correct etc.

Is this likely due to new clutch plates that will bed in?

I recorked the plates in my 1929 500 last summer and it took around 200
miles before everything finally settled down.

A check for how well the clutch is freeing is to pull the clutch right in and
then operate the kickstart - with the engine not running. There shouldn't
be any obvious drag. Except maybe in this weather the drag from the near-frozen
grease in the box.

I've found it helps to not be too quick to put it in gear i.e. after pulling in the clutch lever, give it several seconds before lifting the gear selector lever with your foot.
