With the head tightened down, there is no gap, none at all, not even 0.001".
I shall have to remove the bolts to measure without them fitted, but I don't hold out much hope.
If there is no gap, then I am thinking that I will have to try making a copper gasket as per John Nash's suggestion to sit on top of the spigot. Is there a particular type of copper which I should try and find? approx. 0.025" do you think?

Re: cylinder to head mating question - w/ng
There are a number of threads on this forum on the subject of what to do
when there is no gap between head and barrel. From memory the concensus
is to do as you suggest. As to thickness and type I really don't know - I'd
have to ask.
